Series A round, Series B round…

Some SEO specialists are always trying to find holes in search engine’s algorithm and take advantage of it instead of understanding the culture of Google and others and playing along with them. While this may give short term advantage, it makes websites dependant on these tricks and creates a necessity to constantly change and adapt. Just as someone doing something illegal needs to hide and change location, mobile phone number and clothes… The inevitable end is that the authorities will some day track him down.

Some naive companies are hiring SEO agencies that use these dirty tricks and although they didn’t know anything about it, they become dependant on them. Most medium and big companies can invest on SEO on a regular basis but for small ones this can be tough some times. If they ever stop using them they may find themselves in trouble since the card castle will fall with a weak blowing wind on the next Google update. Grey hat SEO techniques may become Black hat in a month, a week or even days and SEO agencies that are in the loop of Google news can usually act quickly and re-adapt their strategy to avoid getting their clients penalized. What if you don’t have an SEO agency taking care of your online presence anymore? Or if you change agencies and the current one doesn’t know the full details on the previous strategy?
Furthermore, some of these Grey hat strategies are sometimes abstract and haven’t been tested thoroughly, usually just part of a belief, thought, theory or something that “looks like it’s working” and they may be a big risk to take.

SEO shouldn’t be targeted on what currently works best to show up first on Google but on what the philosophy of Google is. This way you can ensure accumulative long term results and benefits without worrying about algorithm changes and penalization updates.

As an example, today someone called at the company I’m contracting for. They were an SEO agency experts in online marketing offering 300 manual submissions to web directories, 75 links to social networks and 6 articles posted to 25 websites every month for only £150. Seriously? This strategy of inflating websites in such an artificial way will end up exploding in a glimpse, specially now that Google is punishing cheaters harder than ever. My recommendation has been to avoid them completely and spend the £150 in getting a great article from a professional content editor instead, something that people find interesting and talk about, something that fulfils a purpose and an action as in this Effective SEO article.

Focus on what Google wants which is nothing else than improving the Internet and the overall user experience: provide people with the information they are searching for in a quick, efficient and comfortable way. Carrying out this simple strategy will become long term SEO results and constant changes to Google algorithm will not harm you, they will actually help you as Google keeps penalizing your naive competitors.

While this may give short term advantage, it makes websites dependant on these tricks and a necessity to constantly change or adapt. The main problem is that companies hiring SEO agencies that use these tricks become dependant on them and although most companies can invest on SEO on a regular basis, if they ever stop using them they may find themselves in trouble since the card castle will fall with a weak blowing wind. Grey and black hat SEO may become black hat in a month, a week or even hours and SEO agencies that are in the loop of Google news can usually act quickly and re-adapt their strategy to avoid being penalized.

Direct link to the tool: Flicksourcer

Jonathan Foucher created Flickholdr a few weeks ago and I am impressed by how good the system is. It is not like other dummy image generators where you get a grey box or images of cats, it allows you to source random Creative Commons images from Flickr or even keyword relevant ones, scale them to your desired size and add a Copyright tag with the authors name automatically.

Flickholdr is mainly designed to be used as a placeholder image tool although I had been using it a couple times to source images for live posts in a quick way, allowing me to save time browsing Flickr for free licensed images and scaling them in Fireworks/Photoshop. The minor problem I had with Flickholdr is that I had to keep changing the URL manually one by one and finding the perfect image was quite tedious.

So I came up with this little script that loads several images in one click. You specify the image size, some relevant keywords (optional) and the quantity of images to generate. Try to keep the quantity number as low as possible since Jonathan shares the service for free and if many requests are made it can turn the service slow for other users.

Find the generator tool here:

Flicksourcer http://xaviesteve.com/pro/flicksourcer/

You can also download the source code completely for free since it has been coded using JavaScript, jQuery and HTML. If you host it in your site remember to mention and link back to Jonathan and to myself (CC-by-sa 3.0).

Another related tool

Are you constantly creating mockups and wireframes? Check out Real Ipsum, a topic oriented English dummy text generator that generates random English text which looks better than Lorem ipsum. And the bookmarklet grabs keywords from the website you choose so the text is completely relevant. Also generates people and company names, random dates, colours, etc. Check it out!

These are code snippets that I use very frequently while developing advanced or custom WordPress themes. I keep adding and improving this list.

Get custom field

Will echo the “thumb” custom field:

$values = get_post_custom_values("thumb"); echo $values[0];

Custom loop

The custom loop allows you to include more than one WordPress loop in the same page:

$carrotposts = new WP_Query();
$carrotposts->query('s=carrot');
if (!$carrotposts->have_posts()) {
  /* no posts */
}else{
  /* we have posts */
  $howmany = $carrotposts->post_count;
  while ($carrotposts->have_posts()) : $carrotposts->the_post();
    /* print posts */
  endwhile;
}

Get URL of the first image in a post

Paste the function in functions.php and run it inside a WP loop or provide a post ID to target a specific one regardless of where you are.

function catch_that_image($id = '') {
$first_img = '';
ob_start();
ob_end_clean();
if (!$id) {
global $post, $posts;
$id=$post->post_content;
$output = preg_match_all('/<img.+src=[\'"]([^\'"]+)[\'"].*>/i', $post->post_content, $matches);
}else{
$custompost = get_pages('include='.$id.'');
$output = preg_match_all('/<img.+src=[\'"]([^\'"]+)[\'"].*>/i', $custompost[0]->post_content, $matches);
}
$first_img = $matches[1][0];

// no image found display default image instead
if(empty($first_img)){
$first_img = "/images/default.jpg";
}
return $first_img;
}

Resize an image easily with TimThumb and this function

Place TimThumb in your theme folder and name it thumb.php.

function timthumb($src, $w, $h) {
	$q = 90;
	$zc = 1;
	$url = get_bloginfo('template_url').'/thumb.php?src='.$src.'&w='.$w.'&h='.$h.'&q='.$q.'&zc='.$zc;
	return $url;
}

Get keywords from the URL

Gets the URL without the domain and converts hyphens and other symbols into spaces. Useful for 404 errors, you could display related tags or do an automatic search into your WordPress.

$keywords = preg_replace("/([^a-zA-Z0-9])/", " ", substr(curPageURL(), strlen(get_bloginfo('url'))+1));

Send an e-mail through WordPress

As simple and effective as that, I use it to send 404 errors and other information to my e-mail as it happens. It is highly customizable and allows you to send HTML emails too.

// sendmail (subject, message)

function sendmail($sub = "Unknown", $text = "(no text)", $to = "me@example.com") {
  $msg = '
    <html>
     <body>
       '.$text.'
     </body>
   </html>';
  $headers = array("From: Garold Walker <garold@example.com>", "Content-Type: text/html");
  $h = implode("\r\n",$headers) . "\r\n";
  wp_mail($to, $sub, $msg, $h);
}

Check if user is logged in

if (is_user_logged_in()) { /*yes*/ }else{ /*no*/ }

WordPress paths and bloginfo variables

Website path:
bloginfo('url');

Template path:
echo bloginfo('template_url');

CSS file path:
echo bloginfo('stylesheet_url');

Charset:
echo bloginfo('charset');

Blog name:
echo bloginfo('name');

WordPress hooks

Remove jQuery default loading in WP

Very useful if you want to defer the loading of any Javascript to the bottom of the page. Watch out not to disable it in the admin panel (add it to the header.php of your theme instead of the functions.php):

wp_deregister_script('jquery');

Remove META GENERATOR

function i_want_no_generators() {
  return '';
}
add_filter('the_generator','i_want_no_generators');

Remove RSD link

remove_action('wp_head', 'rsd_link');

Remove Windows Live Writer

remove_action('wp_head', 'wlwmanifest_link');

PHP

These are PHP codes that don’t use the WordPress ‘framework’ but are helpful to create advanced WordPress themes.

Header info

header('HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found');

Trim text without cutting the words and adding hellip when necessary

/* This function will trim text without
cutting it in the middle of the word and
adding … if longer
*/
function trimtext($text, $length) {
	$words = explode(" ", $text);
	$newtext = "";
	$addhellip = "";
	foreach ($words as $word) {
		if (strlen($newtext." ".$word) < $length) {
			$newtext .= " ".$word;
		}else{
			$addhellip = 1;
			break;
		}
	}
	if ($addhellip) {$newtext .= "…";}
	return $newtext;
}

WordPress Relative date (without/no plugin needed)

WordPress has a function for that:

<?php relative_post_the_date(); ?>

Or also:

Published <?=human_time_diff(get_the_time('U'), current_time('timestamp'))?> ago.

And here’s a function to convert seconds to relative date. Useful to display user-friendly times. Can be highly customized: “3 minutes ago”, “in 2 hours”, “for the last 6 months”, “takes 10 seconds”…

function relativedate($secs) {
  $second = 1;$minute = 60;$hour = 60*60;$day = 60*60*24;$week = 60*60*24*7;$month = 60*60*24*7*30;$year = 60*60*24*7*30*365;
  if ($secs <= 0) { $output = "now";
  }elseif ($secs > $second && $secs < $minute) { $output = round($secs/$second)." second";
  }elseif ($secs >= $minute && $secs < $hour) { $output = round($secs/$minute)." minute";
  }elseif ($secs >= $hour && $secs < $day) { $output = round($secs/$hour)." hour";
  }elseif ($secs >= $day && $secs < $week) { $output = round($secs/$day)." day";
  }elseif ($secs >= $week && $secs < $month) { $output = round($secs/$week)." week";
  }elseif ($secs >= $month && $secs < $year) { $output = round($secs/$month)." month";
  }elseif ($secs >= $year && $secs < $year*10) { $output = round($secs/$year)." year";
  }else{ $output = " more than a decade ago"; }
  if ($output <> "now"){$output = (substr($output,0,2)<>"1 ") ? $output."s" : $output;}
  return $output;
}
echo relativedate(60); // 1 minute

Shorten a URL with Bit.ly’s simple API

function getBitLy($url) {
	$login = "yourusername";

}

Read this post in English

Explicado a continuacion:

Ves a Amigos:

Confirmando y configurando nuevos amigos

Here’s a nice way to keep your privacy settings in Facebook up-to-date and secure. It is really easy to set up and you can customize every friend individually really fast and easy. I’ve been using it for the last year and my account is as secure as I want, just sharing what I want to whom I want and hiding what I don’t want to show too in an easy way to set up and maintain.

Facebook Friend lists

The friend lists are useful to group people regarding your relation with you i.e. Family, Work colleagues, University, High School, London…

But you can also use Friend lists to create Access lists. That’s what we are going to do…

Planning the Access lists

What we will do is to create a list for each type of access. Thiese are the access lists I’ve got:

01 – Status and Links (friends in this group will be able to see wall posts, status updates, Interests and groups I belong to)

02 – Wall Posts (friends here will be able to POST on your wall)

03 – Photos (will be able to see your photos)

04 – Videos (videos are usually more embarrassing/private than photos so I prefer to separate people that can see photos and videos)

05 – Education and Work (will be able to see Education and Work information)

07 – Contact info (will be able to see your address, phone number, etc.)

00 – NOTHING (this people will not be able to see anything! useful for those Facebook friends you don’t know at all but you’ve added through Facebook games, because they are hot, you were drunk or [insert strange reason here])

TIP: Use a prefix like “01 - ” to differentiate between Access and normal Friend lists.

Once you’ve got your lists planned (you can be more specific and differentiate between Status updates and Interests, etc…) let’s create them.

Creating Facebook Access lists

Go to Friends:

And click on Create list:

Now type in the first access group: 01 – Status and links.

Select those friends you want to be able to see your status and links. Maybe you want just some of your family members to be able to see them, or only some work colleagues.

Keep doing this with all the above groups mentioned.

Last step is to create the 00 – NOTHING group. This group will have no access to anything, I use it for those people you just add from Facebook games like Mobwars, Farmville and so, just because you need to have more friends playing it to improve in the game but they are not really your friends.

Configuring the Access lists in Facebook Privacy Settings

Now that we’ve got all our Access lists created let’s go to set them up. Click Account, Privacy settings:

Go through all the sections:

And in each item select Custom:

A popup window will show some settings.

In Make this visible to select Custom and select one or more of the Access groups you just created. In the Except select the 00 – NOTHING.

Here are my settings for Mobile phone:

Another example:

Keep doing this for all the settings. Once you finish it should look something like this:

Editing Access lists later

If you need to edit Access lists later you can do that by clicking Friends:

A list of all the lists will show, select the one you want to edit:

And then click on Edit list at the top right:

And select or de-select friends.

Confirming or adding a new friend

When confirming a new friend:

An Add to list button will appear, click it and a popup window will show:

Customize your new friend’s access to your Facebook stuff. If you don’t know him/her just select the 00 – NOTHING and he/she won’t have access to anything.

The End :)

That’s it, hope this helps everyone be more secure online now that Facebook is messing around with their policies.

Feel free to post any suggestions or ideas to improve this.

Here’s a check-list of terms that every Web Designer or Developer should know. It’s not an extensive tutorial with long definitions, just a list to check how much you know. The purpose of this post is basically intended for non-native English speakers that work in English design agencies so some of the words you’ll see here are really basic (although frequently used while at work).

Some of the definitions are made by me keeping them short and strictly to the point, some are from Wikipedia. The Learn more links to the Wikipedia article or sometimes to another website I found had more accurate information than Wikipedia.

(I’m working on it but published it prematurely since a friend needs it urgently, please search the words not still defined in Google. I’m also planning on translating the words into Spanish. Any help/feedback or corrections are truly appreciated.)
